Bombs Away: 2007

A closer look at the Equidaily.com "eyes closed" BC wagering strategy

10/26/07 It was back in 2003 that we here at Equidaily.com ferreted out and reported on a rather bizarre wagering strategy that seems particularly unique to the Breeders' Cup. And part of what makes it so unique is the simplicity -- almost an "eyes closed" type of betting play...

Three years ago we labeled this idea The All Concept. Simply put, over the five year period ending with 2003 betting on every Breeders' Cup entrant would have produced a positive return in four of those five years. But even more remarkable was the fact that betting ALL entrants in every Breeders' Cup race through the first twenty years would have almost reached the break-even point. That trend is hanging tough three years later with an overall ROI loss of just 2% -- and we have to note that if 74-1 Fran's Valentine was not DQ'd from the Juvie Fillies in 1984 that win total would have rocketed into the black.

Clearly live, winning longshots are the key to The All Concept and, as such, things got even more interesting when we parsed out the Breeders' Cup runners that went off at odds of 20-1 or higher. We've named this off-shoot The Bombs Away Play. The chart below shows the astonishing 25% ROI that has been achieved by betting every runner that went off at odds of 20-1 or higher through the first twenty-three years of Breeders' Cups!

The chart below shows the results for each Breeders' Cup. Certainly The Bombs Away Play has had its down years -- but overall it has resulted in a profit just slightly less than half the time, scoring in eleven of the past twenty-three years.

It is perhaps interesting to note that the last couple of times the Breeders' Cup went off the beaten path and ventured to a new venue -- 2004 at Lone Star and 2002 at Arlington -- both produced positive Bombs Away results.
