But even more remarkable was the fact that betting ALL entrants in every Breeders' Cup race through the first twenty years would have almost reached the break-even point. That trend is hanging tough three years later with an overall ROI loss of just 2% -- and we have to note that if 74-1 Fran's Valentine was not DQ'd from the Juvie Fillies in 1984 that win total would have rocketed into the black.

The chart below shows the results for each Breeders' Cup. Certainly The Bombs Away Play has had its down years -- but overall it has resulted in a profit just slightly less than half the time, scoring in eleven of the past twenty-three years.
It is perhaps interesting to note that the last couple of times the Breeders' Cup went off the beaten path and ventured to a new venue -- 2004 at Lone Star and 2002 at Arlington -- both produced positive Bombs Away results.
