RESULTS Saturday, May 24, 2003 Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

A long, long afternoon. Wet weather washed a couple of turf events to dirt at Monmouth -- we were left with only one event there, which, like the race at Belmont, was run over a soggy main track. In the six races we ended up with we just couldn't get over the hump. The best score of the day was the $88.80/$2 exacta at Lone Star using our second and third picks. Our only winner on top on the day was the meagerly priced Azeri ($2.40) -- but we couldn't hit our cold exacta there as Gary Stevens made an early move with Affluent, our second choice, which left her flat in the lane.

Nacheezmo...Seems to have blossomed as a 3YO. Might be ready for stakes test.
Spite The Devil...Won G3 Withers last time -- beating the top choice -- but not sure the pace scenario will set up as nicely today.

Valid Video...Undefeated at trips less than a mile. Grass is a question mark however.
Rockin On Ready...Faltered in only turf try but speedy sort is worth another look going only five panels.
Second In Command...Last couple might help the price -- but that big win three back shows he's capable of good things if he likes the conditions. Let's see if he likes grass.

Kaw Liga Sioux...Put together a nice, limited season last year. Will need to show some improvement against these but that's not out of the question in 3YO debut.

Magic Mecke...Must make it in from AE list. Hmmm, he's on a good-bad cycle and this should be a 'bad' one -- but he seems to like Calder and might be ready to string a couple together.
Amon...Has been running well this year. Closing style has been coming up just short but addition of blinkers might put him in the game sooner.
Sea Pleasure...Seemed to appreciate the return to this oval last time, winning a stake in best performance to date.

Quick Tip...Don't like that she was dull in this event last year after a nice try -- but she seems to be a little more consistent since last fall.

Stylish...Mott mare might be ready to go after a decent try to start the season in March.
