Coast-to-coast

Three winners on top in six races (Aqueduct, 3.40; Fair Grounds, 2.40; Santa Anita, 9.60). We were DQ'd out of a straight exacta at Fair Grounds -- but we weren't too upset, scratches left a four-horse field there and offered no value, even for winning tickets. Our best hit of the day was at Aqueduct where our top pick won and our top three picks combined for the $70.00/$2 tri.

Otherwise, longshots ruled at Gulfstream. The Appleton result was not quite as surprising as the odds might indicate if you go back and look at the PP's -- but the winner didn't hit our radar before the race. On the other hand, in the Mr Prospector we did successfully manage to toss the fave -- Day Trader -- and that one ran last. And our third pick ran second at 22-1. But again the winner wasn't in our mix as ours ran a frustrating 2-3-4-5.

It was one of those days: A DQ, lack of value, and some unpredicatability combined to serve up a minor loss.

Grey Comet...These state-breds make us a little nervous since they often tend to falter in open company after looking very good against their own kind. Still, this one is 3-3 including two NY-bred stakes and his last was a two-turn win over this course. Hafta go with him.
Penobscot Bay...2-2 in Maryland. The Beyer took a disconcerting drop in that alw win but he seems capable of better.
Mustang Jock...McPeek runner has shown some nice early speed in two-turn tries and showed an affinity for the surface last time.

Out Of Fashion...Drops some weight off of OK fourth in Fall Highweight. Ran a couple of nice Beyer wins in Delaware just prior. Repeat of those makes him tough.
Bet On Joe...7-2-2-2 at the trip including big win in Chicago last time. Trainer does well in all pertinent stats.
Friendly Frolic...Hometown boy seldom throws in a bad performance.

Balto Star...When this one takes to a surface -- like the Saratoga turf -- he's tough. So we'll gamble that he'll fall for this strip. Plenty of speed in here so we'll also have to hope his jock can get a decent stalking position out of the 12-hole. Lot's of "if's" in here.
Kreiger...Another speed-burner. Last two make him hard to ignore.
Bail Out The King...If the speed collapses Mr Day should have this one rolling late.

Lady Tak...Asmussen filly is 2-2 and it's not often a 2YO runs a solid 103 Beyer like she did last time. Hard to go past.
Allspice...Won a sprint stake at Arlington last time. Off for awhile but could be tough.
Souris...Asmussen filly has yet to miss board in six tries -- five of them stakes.

Shalini...Two month layoff and cutback in distance certainly raise questions. But recent turf tries are good enough to suggest she'll be in the hunt late.
Nicole's Pursuit...Nosed top pick last time. Comes in off of similar circumstances to that one and trainer is a little better off of the layoff. Could be tough.
Icee Cheaspeake...Looks to be improving.

Cottage...Another doing well north of the border. On a 3-race streak.
Congaree...Probable fave off of huge Cigar Mile win, but just too inconsistent for us to jump on the bandwagon. However, we can't completely ignore either.
