Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes
by Seth Merrow
RESULTS: A nice day for the Best Bets -- although it could have been much better. Doh!
Turf wagers are turf only
Best Bets
- Aqueduct: Race 1/2... Double... R1/Frenchonionsoup... R2/Shine Upon/Royal Alibi/Oatkadestinyschild.
R1: Frenchonionsoup the convincing winner [$4.60/win].
R2: Shine Upon[3-2] gets up in the final furlong to pass Royal Alibi [6-1]. Oatkadestinyschild was 3rd [5-2]. With about a minute to post the Frenchonionsoup/Royal Alibi doulbe was paying over $60/$2.
Collected: $13.20/$2.
- Aqueduct: Race 2, exacta box, Shine Upon/Royal Alibi/Oatkadestinyschild.
Collected: $32.80/$2 [triple paid $69.00/$2].
- Calder: Race 6, exacta box, Miss Seduction/Two Cheers/Unwritten Story.
Miss Seduction [2-1] and Two Cheers [3-1] separated from the pack late -- but Starland Queen, which we didn't use, was closing stoutly... And just -- just -- nipped our exacta.
We ran 1-3-6. The exacta paid $24.40/$2 and we have to assume ours would have been similar.
- Calder: Race 10, Write When Ready.
Collected $7.00 on the W... [$7.00, 3.60, 3.60].
- Churchill: Race 1, WPS Catfish Hook.
Off a bit slowly, she made a menacing move on the far turn at 20-1. That raised our hopes as she looked good -- but couldn't sustain in the stretch and finished 7th.
- Churchill: Race 3, exacta box, Di's Dr Schumocker/Lone Cypress.
One of two disappointments on the day... I appeared on Capital OTB-TV Saturday morning handicapping the Churchill card [selections also on the Capital OTB website] and I picked Petromom in the 3rd spot. If you follow us regularly you know we like the 3-horse box -- but we got cute here and felt confident with our top two. You know the rest...
Lone Cypress [9-5] won with Petromom [10-1] completing the generous $58.40/$2] exacta. Doh!
- Churchill: Race 5, exacta box, Candy Run/Futuristic.
Ugh. Same scenario. Our pick to run 3rd here was Ship's Cabin -- but again we got cute and only went two deep.
The finish: Ship's Cabin [7-1] over Futuristic [1-1 over Candy Run [3-1] for a $40.60/$2 exacta and $169.60/$2 tri.
- Fair Grounds: Race 5, exacta box, Gal Aloud/Pretty Persuasion/Who Is Lady.
Race was taken off the turf. No wager.
- Fair Grounds: Race 6, Tapachula.
Collected $6.80 on the W [$6.80, 3.80, 2.40].
- Hollywood: Race 2, That Ol'blackmagic.
Collected $5.20 on the W [$5.20, 3.00, 2.80].
WAGERED: $50.00
COLLECTED: $65.00
Aqueduct: Discovery Hcp G3 $100K
Gone Astray...Seems to have come into his own since late summer and looks like a good fit here.
Birdrun...Another that has run his best over the last two or three. Gets tested today.
Haynesfield...Will be prominent early -- and in this short field, late as well.
Bad Action.
Wager: ...$5 exacta Gone Astray over Birdrun.
...$5 exacta box top two.
...$2 exacta box top three.
Churchill: Cardinal Hcp G3 $100K
Long Approach...Just-miss second in this race last year. Off a long time but expect trainer to have her ready.
Lemon Chiffon...Invades from SoCal where she faced some good ones. However, could only managed a third-place finish when she ventured here earlier this year -- but the extra furlong might help today.
My Baby Baby...She's in the hunt more often than not and she likes this track.
Acoma.
Wager: $5 WP on Acoma.
...$2 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.
Hollywood: Hollywood Prevue G3 $100K
Macias...Baffert runner has progressed nicely through first three and looks capable here.
American lion...Solid win in second start. The one to beat if that Beyer last time was for real.
Indian Firewater...Uncoupled barnmate of top pick looks to fit with these.
Seattle Ruler.
Wager: $5 WP on Macais.
...$2 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.
