3-10. Like Saturday it was one of those cards where it would have been just as easy to shoot an oh-fer as it would have been to get five or six on top. We're happy with three (2nd, $9.40; 3rd, $4.30; 6th, $3.00). The winner in the 2nd makes up for at least two or three tough beats at the meet as that one was a move up winner on a DQ. Watching the race live, the pan shot showed jock Migliore aboard our top pick, 7-2 Cooking the Books, taking up late in the stretch as our second choice, 6-1 Preminger lugged in slightly while looking every bit a winner. We held our breath wondering if the stewards would use their discretion to declare that the fouled horse probably was already beaten by the time of the incident, but wound up pleasantly surprised by the DQ. Upon seeing the head-on shot we were even more surprised because the foul wasn't as bad as it looked from the pan-shot. But no complaints as it gave us a cold exacta in that 2nd race ($40.00/$2) and our fourth choice completed the tri ($114.50). We also had a cold exacta in the 3rd ($12.20).
Announced attendance was 55,503 -- spinner-inflated with a stein giveaway. But, in reality it seemed like a decent crowd for a Sunday afternoon. They enjoyed yet one more day of fine weather. The humidity that has hovered over us the entire meet was still present -- but not nearly as stifling as it was earlier. And the was plenty of sunshine.
FIRST RACE
LC Tiffany...Always tough to double up wins going MSW to NW1 -- but this isn't a stellar field and this lightly raced filly looks to be improving and possibly better than these.
Foutain'sprincess...Typically in the mix and was an OK third in stake last time.
Samsincharge...Might appreciate the turf-to-dirt strategy.
No Way No How.
SECOND RACE
Serpe entry...Cockney Gambler is preferred with that 72 Beyer two back. Decent try over the course last time. Kick Up Your Heels might need one.
Fifty Frame...Look for this one to improve with a start under his belt.
Couth...Like top pick he threw in a big number two back and will be dangerous if able to recapture that form.
The Trip Continues.
THIRD RACE
Jo Me the Money...Long time since going two-turns but is in good form, comes out of a win over the track. Could shake free early and be tough to catch.
Edit It...Might have a slight class edge on these -- but slight enough that he might need one off the layoff to reach peak form.
My Names Nicole...Only one that looks capable of perhaps pushing the top one early. Has thrown in some good ones this year -- but was claimed two back by low-percentage trainer.
April Eyes.
FOURTH RACE
Ready Enough...Just missed in dirt-sprint debut. Solid turf works for this.
Donk entry...Both Heights and Beacon Court improved nicely in their second starts.
Cat de Jour ...Just behind Donk pair in debut.
Saturday's Cat.
Oedipus O'Neal.
On dirt: Same.
FIFTH RACE
Merrill Gold...Tossed in a clunker in Monmouth Oaks but fits well with these.
Brushme On...Drops in for a tag and has enough early foot to be a danger.
On the Catwalk...Could be interesting making turf-to-dirt move.
With Due Respect.
Miami Princess.
SIXTH RACE
Amansara...Works seems to indicate she could be well-meant in debut effort.
Double Down Dixie...Also working well.
Perilous Pursuit...Likewise for this gal.
Unbridled Tale.
Saradevin.
On dirt: Same.
SEVENTH RACE
Bend a Little...Really seems to standout amongst this bunch.
Baxter Hall...She's better than latest. Prior form puts her in the thick of this.
Lady Prantlack...Good improving form this summer.
Muguet.
On dirt: Take Me There, Bend a Little.
EIGHTH RACE -- Union Avenue $65K
High Peaks...In deep last time but two back was a good second to the talented Souris. Should appreciate facing state-bred foes.
Slew Motion...Another that is better suited by today's company.
Royal Fudge...Good win over the track last time.
Wild Berry.
NINTH RACE
Unnerving...Will be tough if last served as an appropriate sharpener.
Of All Times...Big step up from MSW to NW1 but seems to have gotten the wake-up call since arriving here.
Jimmy the K...Good improving form.
Old Crow.
On dirt: Witch Ways West, Helene's Dream, Oyagi, Meet My Buddy.
