We started the 2005 Saratoga thoroughbred race meet with a mythical bankroll of $1000. Each day we'll use this space to record our mythical best bets and calculate the accumulated wins and losses.

Yesterday...

Doh! Could only manage second-place in the second-half of the early double after getting our top pick home in the 1st at $13. Then we managed to collect a little on the WP wager in the 3rd. But we were really hanging our hat on the Sheppard/Augustin runner in the nightcap. She looked ready to go in the paddock and we were riding high with confidence going into the gate (not to mention having singled her in a P4 worth $3000+). Around the far turn Spring Stroll and the eventual winner were side-by-side behind the leading group. Castellano took Giant Redwood overland while Bailey tried to save ground with Spring Stroll. It wasn't meant as the horse ran into some traffic and -- according to the Equibase chart -- was taken up in the stretch and finished gamely.
